Chula Vista is San Diego County's second-largest city, and its housing stock spans almost 70 years of construction history. The older neighborhoods west of Interstate 805 have smaller lots, stucco ranch homes from the 1950s through 1970s, and aging concrete flatwork that has been moving with the soil for decades. The newer east-side communities - Eastlake, Otay Ranch, and Rolling Hills Ranch - have larger yards and newer homes, but they were built on clay soils that expand and contract with every rain cycle.
